OUR STORY
The story of MCulture started back in 2004, when Maya Algar (Founder) was working for an educational company in the UK. She was asked by her local council if she would bring back some authentic clothes from Indonesia. Maya was born in Indonesia, her Mother is Chinese and a Catholic, and her Father is Indian and a Hindu. It is her diverse background that has given her such a wealth of knowledge of different cultures. She went on to marry an Englishman, whom she travelled the world with and developed on her already extensive knowledge of cultural diversity and tradition. So, a simple request to share a piece of her culture, mixed with a genuine passion for different backgrounds and cultures of the world, sparked the idea of sourcing authentic clothes for educational purposes. Alongside her brother, Gope Khubani who lives in Indonesia, Multicultural Resources was born, as a small family business, to provide traditional outfits from across the world for educational play.
The first 4 years of our business was focused around sourcing various traditional outfits from Asia. After this time the demand for European outfits started to rise due to the diverse nature of educational facilities. We moved on to sourcing other various traditional and historical outfits from across the world, including British history! As well as increasing the range of cultures represented in the clothing, a demand for accessories started to rise, to provide an enriched and diverse cultural experience for the children through play.
Multicultural Resources quickly became popular with schools and nurseries as Ofsted began to put a focus on bringing knowledge and understanding of the world into the Early Years curriculum. This is where a lot of demand for our clothes came from. We started building a reputation with the schools and nurseries we worked with, for the quality of our products. This reputation and the fact that multicultural diversity became such a big focus in education, our business continued to flourish over the years. Due to this incredible journey and the amazing people we have worked with over the years, we decided that 2020 was the year to go digital and rebrand to MCulture.
At MCulture, our values are rooted in everything we do; Diversity, Authenticity, Quality and Health and Safety. We value quality over quantity, from the authenticity of the designs, the suppliers we source from to being able to work as a family to ensure a high standard of quality control. We have valued contacts across the world who contribute to the business and we continue to source from suppliers where we can make a difference to their families.
For us, it’s not just about the clothes. This is education through play, boosting a child’s confidence and personality whilst wearing spectacular and authentic world outfits. We provide a fun way for children to not only learn about other cultures but for children, teachers and parents alike to share in a celebration of each other’s cultures. As we move into the future, we hope to continue helping and supporting you, our customer, by providing the best quality products we can for your educational facilities. By working together, we can give children knowledge and understanding of the wide world they live in and the people in it. We hope by doing this we can share in a common mission, embracing diversity!
